I really like this song because it gives both sides of war. it shows how war is a nasty thing, but it’s also worth it. And even if soldiers don’t want to be there, they’re going to keep going because they have a purpose. and they have a goal and they’ll do anything to get to the point where they can lay down their guns and lift their hands.

About the song–is it supposed to be about the war?

I like that it talks about surrender–surrender to God rather than to man or fatigue or whatever. But I’m also wondering how many miles this fellow could have saved if he’d realized he could lay down his guns and surrender from ANYWHERE “And I can’t count the miles that I’ve walked to find my way To lay down these guns”. I think that a lot of times we try to find our way to God when really He’s the one who travels to us–we have only to surrender, right where we’re at. Then again, if this is in the context of war, maybe that’s not what it meant at all.
